WWI War Memorial, Victoria Embankment, Nottingham
The newly constructed memorial stands in the eastern part of the Grade II listed Memorial Gardens at Victoria Embankment, Nottingham.
The memorial has been commissioned by Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
The memorial has been constructed on the Victoria Embankment next to the memorial built between 1923 and 1927 on land bequeathed in perpetuity by Jesse Boot. It features the names of all 13,501 from Nottinghamshire who lost their lives in the 1914 – 1918 War, as well as civilian casualties, including nurses, two people killed in a Zeppelin air raid in September 1916 and the victims of the Chilwell shell filling factory explosion of July 1918.
The World War One memorial is thought to be the first of its kind in the country, following the poignant centenary of the day the guns fell silent.
The new memorial is an elevated, circular design constructed with a Portland Stone cladding and Welsh slate panels to the entrance walls and upstand allowing a protected space for reflection.
A five metre high inscribed monument is featured in the middle of the memorial and poppies are fixed upon it. Names of the fallen have been etched into the circular stone surrounding the monument.
The Great War Memorial was officially unveiled by HRH Duke of Kent on Friday 28 June 2019.
